Making Bold Choices: Sally (Slater) Baker '87
For Sally (Slater) Baker '87, transferring to Kalamazoo College led her to more opportunities and experiences than she could have anticipated.
With the desire to study abroad in Germany and an appreciation for the small school feel and atmosphere, K was the right choice. "Other schools had study abroad programs, but, at K, Study Abroad is built into the curriculum," says Sally.
"Without the support I received in my financial aid package, I wouldn't have been able to attend K, so I want to help students in the same situation," Sally says. She and her husband, Donald, have created a bequest in their estate that will support the College after their lifetimes. "Giving as part of our estate will allow us to make a more generous gift than we may be able to give otherwise."
Sally began her career in arts management in New York City, a city in which she did not see herself living at first. "K prepared me to be bolder than I otherwise would have been," she explains, "but I found out I was really a small town girl at heart." She built her experience in different parts of arts management, mostly in fundraising, and found her way back to Michigan at the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Today she works as the Senior Associate Director of Gift Planning at the University of Michigan.
